GUY MOTORS CELEBRATES PRODUCTION OF 5,000th MODEL
• It was Big J Day in Wolverhampton on Wednesday. At the Fallings Park works of Guy Motors Ltd. there were broad smiles all round, gaffers shook hands with apprentices and real old-timers were heard to murmur "another feather in our cap!"
Why? Because they were all celebrating the delivery to its new owners of the 5,000th Big J heavy-duty commercial vehicle which had only a Short while previously left the production jine, at the same time registering another milestone in the company's long history. Handing the vehicle over to Mr. J. M. Beckett, managing director of Tarmac Roadstone Holdings Ltd., already operators of a large,.nuniber of Guy trucks, Mr. A. G. Jones, Guy's m.d., recalled how his firrn;) one of Britain's pioneer commercial vehricle producers, became linked with Jaguar Cars Ltd. in October 1961 when the Wolverhampton concern's main selling lines were the Invincible and Warrior ranges of heavy-duty lorries. "Since then," said Mr. Jones in a message to all employees, "we have all seen the company's impressive rise to stability. Our existing range of vehicles was improved and rationalized, and sales rose again. This gave our engineers sufficient 'breathing space' to take a clean sheet of paper, and create a completely new range of trucks and tractive units—the Big J—which has proved to be the best and most successful Guy ever made. We have, of course, recently adapted the Big J range for passenger use, in the form of the Warrior J-type bus chassis for export; whilst at home our sales force has been bringing in many _Big J orders—worth over £ lOrn during the first half of this year alone.
. "Guy plays an important part in the truck and bus division of the British Leyland Motor Corporation; and is currently producing more heavy-duty units for the home market than any other ntember of the division. "Production of the 5,000th Big J model marks just one more step in the company's progress."
