CUMBRIAN HAULAGE firm Barnett and Graham has been placed into administration with the loss of 101 jobs. Up to 50 of the redundant workers are said to be drivers.

Employees say the decision to

shut the business on 15 September came as a shock. The familyrun firm has been delivering aggregates throughout the UK since it was formed in 1964.

Transport manager Richard Hewetson says "difficult trading conditions" forced the company to close: "There came a point where we had to make a decision. "If we called in the administrators, staff would still get paid and everyon e would get redundancy money. So that's what we did." Hewetson is now working as an owner-driver. "I always kept a truck in case I needed to drive off into the sunset — and that's what I'm doing now."

The company's administrator is Armstrong Watson.
