Some of the more interesting statistics lurking among the reams of data published by the DfT can be found in the section on accidents involving foreign vehicles.
In 2005, fewer than 1% (2,402) of the 366.236 vehicles involved in accidents were foreignregistered, of which 75% (1,807) were left-hand drive (LHD). To distil this further, there were 10,650 accidents involving trucks last year, of which 1,117 were foreign registered; 1,031 of them were LHD.
This means that about 10% of truck crashes involved foreign-registered left-hookers.
Almost half the accidents involving LHD foreign trucks happened when the vehicle was changing lanes to the right. In all, there were 409 accidents of this type last year.
That said, 325 UK-registered trucks managed to have accidents performing the same manoeuvre — and another 300 accidents were caused by trucks changing lanes to the left.
