GRANTHAM, UNCS-BASED Treasure Transport is the latest company to sign up to a government-funded fuel savings review. which has been improving fuel efficiency by more than 10%. FuelChamp manages the programme for the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) and the Department for Transport (DET). It is designed to boost fuel and fleet efficiencies in the aggregates sector; to date, 200 companies have signed up for two-and-a-halfday reviews.
FuelChamp has a contract with the DIT until March 2007 to provide the service to a potential 400 operators, and project manager Paul Spink says it is well on its way to being sold out: "We're six months away from the scheme being completed. We're on target and on budget, with some excellent results."
The review coaches drivers and operators to drive fuelefficiently, providing them with tools to manage fuel efficiency and assessing each company's methods of buying and storing fuel.
A recent FuelChamp survey found that the course cuts fuel bills by an average of 10.7% .To be eligible,a company must generate at least 25% of its work from aggregates.
Spink explains: "[The review] promotes and uses the advice of specialists, because it is thought that some transport companies may be a little insular and don't take advice from people who might be more experienced in a particular subject."
