Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• HGV sales are very poor, with prices not breaking any records, says NFC Car Auctions commercial vehicle manager Howard Thornton.

"HGV buyers are having a bad time and are not spending much money," he says. "Things have been deteriorating for six months, but the slump in prices has been really noticeable in the past seven or eight weeks."

Thornton says vehicles are still coming through in the same numbers — and being sold — "but it's hard to get a price that is pleasing to both parties". In contrast, sales of light commercials are very good, he says.

"We sell a lot of W and Xreg Bedford HA and Dodge vans. The mid-range is attracting prices of 2500 up to 23,000 — anything above that is difficult but still moving," Thornton explains. 'The majority of these vehicles come from company fleets, which makes them very desirable — if they've been through the trade two or three times that has a detrimental effect on price."

NFC Car Auctions has be to specialise in sales popular with the trade. It now holds regular auctions of council lit des and has one sale a mont devoted to the gas and electricity boards.

"These types of specialist sale — which usually consist hal, Escort and Sherpa vans, Transit diesel boxes, 13-tont Leyland boxes and tippers w Hi-ups — encourage people travel," says Thornton. We are very easily accessible he — half an hour from Manche ter, Liverpool, Birmingham Derby — so people come fr( all over. And that produces more competitive bidding."

NFC Car Auctions was opened in 1973 and is based a four-hectare (10-acre) site the A500 (off the M6) in Stoke-on-Trent. Facilities include under-cover heated vie ing space, and restaurant.
