• In response to a spate of attacks on bus crews and a rising tide of vandalism, Yorkshire Rider has launched 'Bus Beat', as a way of getting accurate information on incidents to the police with the minimum of delay.

The scheme has already gone into action in the Bradford area where, says YR's Doug Turner, "We've had 19 assaults on drivers in the past 18 months, ranging from spit ting to shooting with an air rifle.

"There is an average of 70 incidents of bus vandalism a week in Bradford," he says, "with suprisingly few incidents late at night — late afternoon is proving to be the worst period."

Bus Beat will combine driver training, a police database and a public education programme to "build on the security system we already have", says Turner.
