WITH REFERENCE to your write-up (CM. September 11), it is most disturbing for one who has had faith in the aforementioned journal's reporting to find, in this instance, that there is little, if any, accuracy in the report.

The Transcontinentals we operate are all 6x4s. (Currently we have 13 in service having placed the first one on the road in 1975.) In the case you are reporting on, the wheels did not become detached from the hub. What did happen was that the hub locknut, locking plate and bearing locknut slackened off and the hub, complete with road-wheel bearings and axle shaft, became detached from the axle casing.

The vehicle is less than three years old.

Obviously 1 cannot go into further detail at this time and date.

With regard to slack road-wheels, we do not experience any problems. Those that are spigoted are very reliable and some vehicles on which we changed the specification to Albion axles with spigoted roadwheels are more reliable than those they replace.

7"ransport manager Glasgow District Council We are sorry for the inaccuracy concerning the wheel configuration of the Ford Transcontinental tractive units operated by Glasgow District Council. However, our report, which was based on information obtained from Strathclyde police, was substantially correct. We are pleased to be able to put the record straight — Editor.
