AUSTIN ROVER is to spend £80 million building Peugeot gearboxes under licence at its Longbridge car plant.
The new gearbox is still under devel opment by Peugeot in France and will be used with Austin Rover's own planned K-Series engine which will power the Metro replacement — codenamed AR6 — due in 1986.
Production of licence-built Peugeot transmissions is due to begin within the next two to three years with annual output expected to be around 200,000 units.
It will replace the A-Series gearbox currently used in the Metro hatchback and Metro van.
