SCOTTISH Licensing Authority Hugh McNamara threatened not to return to Shetland in a hurry, after a somewhat futile recent visit when he found little interest in the case under review.

Future Shetland cases will be heard in Edinburgh, he said.

Johnson Transport of Lerwick was refused a standard operator's licence for the use of a site at St Jugelar, in Upper Baila.

Although there were nine objectors, only two attended and the applicant did not appear either. McNamara commented that that was "very discourteous" when Johnston had only to cross the street whereas he had to come from Edinburgh. There were no police or local authority objections and the two resident objectors who did appear said nothing against the firm.

Shetland Islands Council planners had no objection.

There was doubt about which of two brothers operated the vehicles and on whose land it stood. The residential objection was to rusting vehicles on unsuitable roads.

The site was refused on environmental grounds, hut time given to allow the company to find an alternative base.

If the decision is not obeyed, McNamara will instruct the Procurator Fiscal to lay charges against the company.
