BECAUSE the owner had registered a six-seater as a goods vehicle.• although he said he used it for private purposes and paid the private-car rate of purchase tax when buying it, he was brought before 'Shrewsbury magistrates last week for parking it in a street reserved for cars
Victor Hendel, proprietos or the Prince Rupert Hotel, Shrewsbury, pleaded not guilty to the charge. It was stated that the vehicle had been registered as a goods type. It was possible to register it as a private car, but no special declaration had been made. stated a taxation department clerk.
The defending solicitor said that only two of the 13 street parking places in Shrewsbury were available for vehicles of the kind 'concerned in the case. The Bench recommended that the town's by-laws be amended. They thought that the offence had been proved, but because of a "general -misunderstanding," Hendel was discharged on payment of 4s. costs.
Defendant paid a £1 fine for parking his vehicle for longer than the permitted time.
