1VIAJOR military manceuvres in In Southern Command from October 9-18 will cause heavy road congestion and necessitate the diversion of traffic. From dusk on October II to dawn on October 13, the following main roads. will be heavily congested:—A4, east of Caine to Froxfield; A303, Willoughby Hedge to Weyhill; A36, Warminster to Salisbury; A30, Shaftesbury to Basingstoke; and A354, Blandford to Salisbury. There will be two cast-west diversions. The northerly will be: Reading — Streatley — Wantage — Farringdon — Swindon — Wootton Bassett —Chippenham — Bath — Radstock —Shepton

Mallet — llchester Ilminster Yarcombe. The southerly will be: London

— 'Esher — Guildford — Peterfield — Winchester — Totton — Lyndhurst — Christchurch—Poole—Lychett Minster reha m—Wool—Do rchester, fanning out to Sherborne—YcovilCrewkerne — Yarcombe. From the :afternoon of October 12, this diversion will be varied as: Lytchett Minster: Bere Regis—PuddIetown—Dorchester.

From dawn on October 13 to dusk on October 16, these diversions will continue. but A30 (London—Basingstoke) will be usable by civilian traffic. From dusk on October 16 to October 18, the northerly diversion will cease; because A4 (Reading—Marlborough--Chippenham—Bath) will be • clear.

North-south diversions are as follows: Dusk on October 11 to dawn on October. 17, diversion to avoid Wiltshire in the west, Swindon—Chippenham — Melksliam — Trnwhridee — A32 Frome — Wincanton — Sturminster — Nevvton — Blahdf Or Witnborne Minster (until dusk on October 12. the route south of Wincanton will be Sherborne — Dorchester — Wareham — Lytchett Minster—Poole); dawn on October 12 to dusk October 13, diversion to avoid Wiltshire to the east, Swindon 7-Ashbury — Newbury -Basingstoke—then varying according to situation. This diversion will alter from dusk on October 13 to dusk on October 16 to either Newbury—Whitchurch — Winchester, or Newbury — 'Andover—Stockbridge—Romsey.

One-way Traffic

From October 10-1'6, one-way traffic will operate between Blandford and Wimborne, in the one case via Badbury Rings and in the other via Roundhouse and Sperrisbury. It may be necessary for some bus services to be altered at short notice, but it is not intended to suspend any. Nearly 12,000 vehicles will take part and lighting may be reduced to a minimum or dispensed with entirely.

Manoeuvres which began yesterday and will continue until Tuesday, will disrupt traflic in Bucks and Berks. To-night, traffic will be heavy south of A40. The Whitchurch toll bridge, .Pangbourne, will be closed to civilian . traffic from 7 p.m. to-morrow until early Monday morning. To-morrow night, military traffic will be crossing the Reading-Wallingford-Oxford road south of the river and on Sunday there will be heavy traffic on approaches to the Whitchurch bride.
