NEW FLEET OF REFUSE VEHICLES FOR ISLINGTON.

A fleet of modem refuse-collection vehicles has recently been purchased by Islington Borough Council to replace a number of out-of-date machines previously used for this purpose. On Monday, October 1, a demonstration of the new fleet was held at Islington Town Hall, when delivery was formally accepted by the Mayor. Alderman G..H. Bull, chairman of the cleansing committee, stated that the choice of machine had been decided only after exhaustive tests. It had been found that the petrol vehicle is speedier and is more economical to run and, in consequence of the results obtained, this type of machine had been adopted.

The fleet comprises 21 S.D. Freighters of the low-loading type, built by Shelvoke and Drewry, Ltd., of Letchworth, Herts. The bodies are of 11-cubic-yd. capacity, and loading may be effected from either side. Dustless covers are provided for each loading bay. The bodies are of the end-tipping type, and a feature of interest is the use of a four-cylindered pump for the tipping gear. The cost of the new fleet is £14,000.

CROYDON TO WATCH BROADCASTING VANS.

The general purposes committee of Croydon Corporation reports that further complaints have been received concerning the use of loud-speakers on advertising vans. The committee is of the opinion that this practice is increasing and that the time has arrived when. steps should be taken to enforce the bylaw relating to the playing of mechanical musical instruments in public places.

It is not proposed to take any action duringthe next six months, except in abnormal circumstances. The committee recomniends, however, that, at the end of that period it be authorized to issue a summons in any case where a mechanical musical instrument is used in a public place to the annoyance or disturbance of residents.

Furniture Vans to be Fumigated ?

The health committee of Bermondsey Borough Council considers that furniture removers should be obliged to have their vehicles thoroughly fumigated each time they are used and immediately after the conveyance of furniture. The committee has asked the Association of MetropOlitan Town Clerks to consider the promotion of legislation to meet this need in the next London County Council (General Powers) Bill.
