Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

by Ian Reeves • Union bosses fear that 50 jobs will go at William Jackson's Hull distribution centre following the grocery and bakery company's sale of some of its stores.

The distribution centre at Melton is run by Tibbett and Britten and currently employs 100 warehouse staff and drivers. But William Jackson has sold 25 of its stores to Argyll and Kwiksave and the loss of volume means the workforce will have to be halved by January.

George Douse of the Transport and General Workers Union has been in negotiation with Tibbett and Britten over the cuts, but says: "It's a harsh reality. If the volume of goods isn't there, then the work's not there."

David Chaffer, general manager of the distribution centre, refuses to put a figure on the redundancies. "We are in the process of calculating the effects of the loss of the stores," he says. "It's too early to say how many jobs will go."
