Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Iveco Ford has become the first European truck builder to fit the Cummins C Series engine with the launch of its latest lightweight 6 x4 rigid chassis, the Cargo 2421C.

Although versions of the C Series have been fitted to PSV chassis — notably the Dennis Javelin — Iveco Ford is the first manufacturer to use the 8.3litre six-cylinder engine in a truck. Maximum gross power from the turbocharged C Series (designated the 6CT8.3) is 157kW (211hp) at 2,400 rpm, while its peak torque is 773Nrn (570 Ibft) at 1,500 rpm. Both figures are to BSAu 141a.

By fitting the C Series, Iveco Ford has been able to make significant weight savings over its existing 179kW (240hp)] 10-litre Ctmuninspowered 2424 Cargo chassis.

On a typical 4.26m wheelbase tipper chassis with fourspring steel rear suspension, the 2421 weighs in with a quoted kerbweight of 6,300kg, giving a body/payload of 18,090kg. This compares with the 2424's 6,876kg kerbweight and 17,380kg body payload.

The 2421C has the same high-tensile steel chassis as its more powerful brother the 2424, as well as other Cargo 6x4 features such as the Iveco Ford four-spring, and Hendrickson two-spring mechanical steel rear suspensions, along with Eaton drive axles.

For those tipper/mixer operators looking for maximum payloads at 24-tonnes GVW, however, the 2421 and 2424 are now both available with the option of Henrickson Norde rubber suspension on the rear bogie.

The Hendrickson Norde package is 240kg lighter than a conventional two-spring steel suspension, and 140kg lighter than a four-spring unit.

In the 2421, the C Series is coupled to a new 356mm diameter Dana Spicer twin-plate clutch with asbestos freelinings. For the time being, the 2421 will only be available with the ZF eight-speed plus crawler range change 9S-109 Ecomid synchromesh gearbox, although from the second half of next year there will also be the choice of the new Eaton 6109 synchromesh gearbox.

The 6109 is another eightspeed plus crawler rangechange unit and is currently fitted in America. Iveco Ford, however, is scheduled to become the first European truck builder to fit it in 1988.

Iveco Ford is offering the 2421 in the same wheelbases as the 2424. They are 4.26,4.93 and 5,5m for haulage work, and 4.26 and 4.93 for mixer/tipper operations.

For mixer use, the 2421 can also be specified with a frontend crankshaft pt-o and assymetric rear suspension. Full prices for the 2421 range are yet to be released, although Iveco Ford says that a four-spring chassis will retail at around £37,500. The 2421 will be shown for the first time at the Scottish Motor Show, and full production will begin at the Cargo plant in December.

In addition to its latest lightweight tipper chassis, Iveco Ford has developed a 114kW (153hp) non-HGV 0815 Cargo chassis for high-mileage operators running with box bodywork at 7.5 tonnes GVW.

The uprated 0815 is powered by the six-litre Ford turbocharged engine which has a maximum torque of 419Nrn (362 lbft) at 1,700 rpm. Coupled to a ZF five-speed overdrive gearbox, and a 3.73:1 Rockwell back axle, the 0815 has a geared speed of 127km/h and an engine speed of 1,822rpm at 97km/h.

The 0815 is available only with a sleeper cab in 3.6,4.25 and 4.85m wheelbases and comes with disc brakes allround. According to Iveco Ford, the 0815 will cost some £700 more than the existing 0813 chassis.

Iveco Ford is offering a number of new vehicle options through its Special Vehicle Operations division including a 'petrol regs package for its Cargo tractive unit, and a low-height 17-tonne rigid for the drinks trade.
