COUNTY COUNCILS are likely to overspend by £53 million in carrying out their transport policies and programmes during the current financial year — but are expected to make up the money by other transport savings.

This was stated in the Commons last week by Transport Minister Mr William Rodgers, who said that the £53 million overspend had been suggested by the E165 million estimate of revenue support expenditure.

Some authorities were contemplating fares increases which would reduce the amount of the overspend, went on Mr Rodgers. But he said it was likely in any event to be completely offset by savings on other items of local transport expenditure.

He added that current expenditure on road maintenance by local authorities in England and Wales was likely to be somewhat below £400 million at November 1975 prices. But it was too early to predict accurately the final outturn.
