IN A TIGHT run contest, four first year motor apprentices from Carshalton College of Further Education fought their way ta victory in the annual Vehicle Trades Apprentice competition organised by the Road Transport Industry Training Board.
The four lads were rewarded with prizes donated by companies in the motor industry which were presented by the Under Secretary of State for Employment, John Golding MP.
Three other teams took part in the final including members from Carlisle Technical College, Hull & District Road Transport Training Group and Hartwells Garages Ltd.
These four finalists had won through from 206 teams comprising over 1,000 apprentices who had initially entered the contest.
The competition, which is now in its fourth year, was held at London's Royal Lancaster Hotel. The four teams had to undertake practical tasks, including refitting the engines to four identical Vauxhall Vivas.
Other practical . jobs involved replacement of cylinder head gaskets and refitting diesel fuel injectors.
The teams took part in a five round theoretical competition on University Challenge lines.
Courtenay Edwards, Motoring Correspondent of the Sunday Telegraph, acted as question master for this part of the contest.
The four winning team members and reserve were: Keith Cannon, James Donachy, Russell Mees, William Roberts and Roy Williams.
