ANET deficit of £1,475,000 for year
ended March 31 last is recorded in the accounts of Co rat lompair Eireann. This is an improvement of £131,000 on the 1963-4 year and a saving of £525,000 on the annual subsidy; this balance is committed to the deficit of succeeding years.
There was great public support during the year for regular road passenger services, also for coach and day tours, operations from this side yielding a surplus of £660,000. The favourable balance on road freight operations amounted to £45,000. But on the other. side of the account a loss of £1,202,000 was incurred on railway working. On the CIE revenue, road passenger services yielded 36-3 per cent, road freight 15 per cent, passenger trains 16 per cent and freight trains 201 per cent.
Dublin city services carried 248M. passengers (compared with 218M. in 1963-4). Other city services carried 38-4M. (34.2M.), provincial services 19-8M, (16-6M,), toured and private hire 2.1M. (1.7M.). Road passenger receipts for the year were £8,872,608 (£7,104,336). Fresh road services were provided in place of a number of railway lines and to serve places where small stations have been closed.
