Stand 83

AMONG the six Vulcan exhibits is to be found a forward-control 5-ton tipping lorry with a Gardner 4LK fourcylindered oil engine of 3.8 litres, developing 53 b.h.p. at 2,000 r.p.m. The drop sides of the body are detachable and are constructed of ash.

In length, the body is 12 ft. 3 ins., the width being 6 ft. 6 ins, and the sides 2 ft. deep. Edbro 3E-type twinram tipping gear is located behind the cab, This machine appears in company with two other 5-tonners, both with forward control, one being shown in chassis form and the other as a dropsided lorry with a body 14 ft. 6 ins. long. Both these machines have four cylindered engines of 102 mm. bore and 140 mm. stroke, designed by the Vulcan company and incorporating Ricardo

patents. The piston displacement is 4.576 litres and the b.h.p. is 77.

Special attention to the easy removal of the engine has been paid in designing the front end of the chassis.

Power is transmitted through a unitconstructed four-speed gearbox and a two-piece tubular propeller shaft fitted with three flexible couplings and a centre support bearing.

The stripped chassis exhibit has a: wheelbase of 11 ft. 6 ins., but the complete 5-tonner is of 11-ft. 84-in. wheelbase.

The 25-cwt. normal-control model, which has a 2,95-litre four-cylindered engine, appears as a drop-sided lorry, the body of which is 10 ft. long. Luton bodywork of about 800 cubic ft. is mounted upon the 24-ton forwardcontrol chassis, in which is mounted a 3.308-litre four-cylindered engine of 50 b.h.p.

Cattle hauliers will be particularly interested in the forward-control truck shown with a Jennings triple-purpose body. A removable container, suitable for the transport of horses, cattle and sheep, is mounted on a permanent flat platform.—Vulcan Motor and Engineering Co., Ltd., Crossens, Southport.
