THIS exhibit marks the entry into 1 the tractor field of Universal Power Drives, Ltd. The company is showing a new four-wheel-drive tractor for maximum-load work. Also on view is its two-axle-drive bogie unit, which has a capacity of 8-10 tons.

The tractor has a six-cylindered engine of 5.244 litres piston displacement, which develops 85 b.h.p. It forms a unit with a clutch and fivespeed gearbox, mounted on three points on rubber, and transmitting power to a two-speed auxiliary box, so that there are ten ratios available in all. Thence power is conveyed fore and aft by other jointed shafts to a rigid rear axle and jointed front axle. The latter is of particular interest owing to the interesting steering and power-transmitting arrangement at the ends, A feature of this is the use of Rxeppa constant-velocity universal joints, which transmit through wide angularity. Another notable point of this machine is that there are two power take-offs on the primary gearbox, and one on the auxiliary gearbox, by which the highest available torque can be taken advantage of, whilst special interest attaches to the frame construction and the depth of both the main channels and end cross members.

In addition to the tractor, the new bogie is well.worth investigation.. Outstanding features are larger axles, Girling 16-in. by 4-in. brakes, and the method by which the auxiliary gearbox has been strengthened, together with the torque housing on the ixle nose.—Universal Power Drives, Ltd., Aintree Road, Perivale, Middlesex.
