POPULAR with operators ot light vans at home and abroad, the Singer 5-7-cwt. van, costing £117 10s., is a good example of economical transport. With a floor area of 19 sq. ft., and an inside length of 4 ft. 10 ins., the body capacity is 65 cubic ft.

Of 60-nun. bore and 86-mm. stroke, the 972 c.c. four-cylinclered overheadcamshaft engine develops a maximum of 25.4 b.h.p. at 4,000 r.p.m. Special aluminium-alloy pistons are employed and are drilled for oil economy, in conjunction with a patented design of scraper rink. The gudgeon pins are fitted with pads, and engine lubrication is on the forced-feed principle. Ignition is by highAension coil and distributor, and mixture is delivered through a Sole& self-starter-type carburetter.

Power is transmitted through a threespeed gearbox, a single-dry-plate clutch and an open propeller shaft with HardySpicer needle-roller joints, to the semifloating-pattern rear axle. Lockheed hydraulic brakes take effect on all wheels. A low centre of gravity is ensured by under-slinging the hear& at the rear. — Singer Motors, Ltd., Coventry.
