Stand 60 .
ONE of the biggest displays in the 'L./Show is to be seen on this stand, where no fewer than 12 vehicles are arrayed. Special interest attaches to the 14 h.p. utility vehicle, which is an entirely new model. The body provides seating accommodation for seven persons, or, when required, two passengers in addition to a load of goods covering 27 sq. ft.
Outstanding features of chassis design include independent front-wheel suspension, and a remarkably smooth four-cylindered side-valve engine developing 51 b.h.p. Ignition is by coil, with 'automatic advance and retard, whilst lubrication is on the forced-feed -principle.
Transmission is by a single-plate clutch, and four-speed ge'arbox with synchromesh, engagement for all ratios. These two units, along with the engine,
OF the six exhibits on this stand, the 40-ton eight-wheeled machinery trailer, with an overall length of 30 ft. 9 ins, and a width of 8 ft.. is undoubtedly the most interesting. It has a main deck measuring 16 ft. by 8 ft.. the space in the foredeck being 6 ft. 10 ins. by 7 ft. 2 ins. The heavy cranked frame is in rolled channel steel. The four front wheels are fitted with 720 by 180 twin solid-rubber tyres, patented pivoting spring gear allowing the tyres to conform with ground contour. The rear wheels, equipped with 720 by 8-in, solid-rubber tyres, are fitted in oscillating beams.
In order to allow the back of the frame to be lowered to the ground, the rear-wheel assembly is made detachable, the actual lowering of the frame being
are rubber mounted at three points in a strong but light box-girder" frame. Rear-wheel suspension is by long semi-elliptics.
The 8-cwt. chassis serves as the basis of a smart 80-cubic-ft. van, and of a utility vehicle with convertible bodywork with comfortable seating for five persons. The engine is a 30 b.h.p. side-valve unit, whilst the gearbox is of the " all-synchromesh " type. The duo-servo four-wheel brakes require only light pedal pressure and are self-energizing.
The 15-cwt. inodel is shown as a normal-control van with a 40 b.h.p. four-cylindered side-valve engine, with which is incorporated a single-dryplate ventilated clutch and four-speed' gearbox. Bishop cam and roller steering gear is a feature of the design.
A spacious van body is mounted on by hydraulic jacks.. Brakes are provided on. all wheels, being operated by a hand wheel at the rear of the trailer with cable gear for front operation from the tractor. A winch giving an 8-ton treble purchase is fitted on the foredeck.
The L.M.S. pattern 10-ton, .all-steel, six-wheeled .low-load trailer shown has a length of 17 ft. lot ins, and a width of 7 ft. 3,1 ins. The longitudinal members of this trailer are of rolled steel with a pressed-steel drawbar. A feature in its design lies in the simplified suspension system, in which shackles, pins or slides have been eliminated, thus providing a high factor of reliability.
By arranging for the rear springs to pivot, an unusually low axis of oscillation is made possible. Brakes on the one of the two NI-type 20-25-cwt. chassis on view, whilst the other carries a lorry body for mineral waters. The van has forward control and the lorry normal control.
The popular N2 1/-2-tanner appears as a normal-control drop-sided lorry with a body 9 ft. 2 ins, long and 5 ft. 6 ins. wide. The six-cylindered sidevalve engine has a four-bearing crankshaft and camshaft, the latter being driven by a double chain.
Two N3 2-3-tonners are on view, comprising a normal-control drop-sided lorry, and a similar forward-control machine.
The normal-control lorry with dropsided body has a 12-ft. platform, but the use of forward control increases this dimension to 15 ft. The body of the normal-control platform vehicle is 9 ft. 2 ins. long. Cowdrey self-energizing brakes operate on all four wheels, whilst the engine is a, powerful 70 b.h.p. side-valve six-cylindered unit.
The well-known 30 m.p.h. 4-5-tonner (LN5) is seen as a stripped forwardcontrol chassis, as well as in the form of a normal-control platform lorry and a forward-control drop-sided lorry. These are among the outstanding exhibits and weigh less than 2i tons unladen; this limit is not exceeded even when hydraulic end-tipping bodywork is fitted.
In the 4-5-tonner, an 80 b.h.p. sidevalve power unit is employed, transmitting the drive through a system incorporating Layrub universal joints, which require no lubrication.—Commer Cars, Ltd., Luton.
four rearmost wheels are operated by the Clayton Dewandre vacuum system, with a cable from the tractor, provided with a lever at the side of the trailer, to form an independent means for application.
A 3-ton semi-trailer, designed specifically for use behind the Scammell mechanical-horse-type tractor, forms another interesting exhibit.
Of the three other trailers shown, there is a six-wheeled, cross-country log wagon, specially suitable for operation on swampy ground; a 6-ton semitrailer fitted to a " Studebaker 4-ton chassis, and an 8-ton, four-wheeled, lightweight chassis. The latter is fitted with an interlocking, ball-bearing turntable to provide for ease of operation when manceuvring.
