Stand y6 and London-type Taxicab Form Attractive Display

AA S a newcomer to the Austin range, the Twelve shooting brake will undoubtedly attract more than usual interest. The body accommodates six seated passengers and still leaves ample luggage space, whilst all the rear seat are collapsible and can be folded flush with the floor. The vehicle is priced at £277 10s.

Other models on this stand include the latest 7 h.p. van, which costs £115 in priming colour. A four-cylindered side-valve engine of 7.8 h.p. and a four-speed synchromesh gearbox are employed. The body provides a capacity of 55i cubic ft.

Further vans on view comprise the 6-8-cwt. 10 h.p. model with an 83cubic-ft. body and an 8-10-cwt.

I T has been unnecessary for Vauxhall Motors, Ltd., to make any .radical alteration in design for 1938, but various minor improvements have been incorporated with a view to increasing durability and performance. Steering, braking, springing and the electrical system have been improved, whilst a thermostat is now embodied in the outlet pipe of the cylinder head.

The special piston rings are individually cast in a novel way, which give a . controlled variation of pressure against the cylinder walls. Use of these rings enables a larger quantity of oil to be delivered to the bore. Tin-plated castiron pistons are employed. Cooling and crankcase ventilation have been improved, the size of the oil pump has been increased, and a new type of A.G. oil filter adopted.

The exhibit comprises eight goods models of 8-cwt., 12-cwt., 30-cwt., 2-ton and 3-ton capacity, a 25-seater coach and a couple of ambulances. Known as the Vista, the coach has a handsome Lhiple body and costs £833 complete. The seats provide ample knee room and have Dunlopillo cushions.

The steel body panels are detachable to facilitate easy replacement, whilst the rear panels are swept outward and special valances are fitted on each side. They are mounted upon an ash framework, strengthened by means of steel plates.

One of the ambulances is a Bedford product, of good appearance and carrying the coat of arms of the Borough a10

of Luton. The other is a handsome Vauxhall S-type 25 h.p. well-finished vehicle. Among the additional equipment are a sun visor, window blinds, guard rails, Lomas four-movement stretcher, Notek fog lamp, a Clayton heater and other. devices.

The company's range of vans is represented by an 8-cwt., 12-cwt., and a 30-cwt. example. Another 30-cwt. model appears as a drop-sided lorry. The 2-ton range is typified by a shortwheelbase end tipper and a long-wheelbase drop-sided lorry, and the 3-ton class by a short-wheelbase hydraulic end machine. The latter has a 12 h.p; engine and the body has a capacity of 88 cubic ft'

Two ambulances, one of 18 h.p. and

• the other of 20 h.p., also find a place on the stand, alongside a 12.8 h.p. taxicab, built to conform with Scotland Yard requirements and priced at £395 complete.

The 18 h.p. ambulance incorporates Girling brakes, whilst a Clayton Dewandre servo system is employed in the 20 h.p. model. In both cases, built-in hydraulic jacks are provided. The smaller ambulance costs £545, including special equipment, whilst the 20 h.p. model is priced at £865.— Austin Motor Co., Ltd., Longbridge Works, Birmingham.

The 2-ton end tipper is 16 ft. 9i ins. in overall length and 6 ft. 5 ins. wide ; a body length of S ft. 1k ins, is afforded. The vehicle turns the scale at 2 tons 14 cwt.

The 2-ton long-wheelbase lorry has a body 11 ft. 64 ins, long, with an overall length of 19 ft. 8 ins. The unladen weight is 394 cwt. The drop Sides and corner posts are quickly detachable, as is the tailboard, enabling the vehicle to

used as a fiat -platform lorry.

In the 3-ton range, the end tipper has a 3k-cubic-yard body, which is said to tip a 4-ton load in 45 seconds. The telescopic gear affords a maximum angle of tip of 50 "degrees, and is selfaligning. . With an overall length of 15 ft. 34 ins., it is possible tor the vehicle to turn M.o. 39-ft. circle. The body is 8 ft. 14 ins, long and 6 ft. 64 ins. wide. The complete vehicle turns the scale at 2 tons 6i cwt.

The 3-ton long-wheelbase drop-sided lorry weighs 2 tons 84 cwt. unladen, and is 21 ft. 04 in. long. The body is 14 ft. long and 6 ft. 6 ins. wide, The 8-cwt. van is a handy vehicle for the trader and provides 75 cubic ft. of loading space.

Six-cylinderecl engines are employed throvhout the Bedford range, the power unit of the 8-cWt. vehicle being of 12 h.p., of the 12-cwt: Model 19.8 h.p., and of the 30-cwt., 2-ton and 2-ton machines 26.3 h.p. The largest engine develops 64 b.h.p. at 2,800 r.p.m.—Vauxhall Motors, Ltd., Luton.
