Details of a 7-8-ton Chassis with Sixcylindered Heavy-oil Engine and a Low-frame Passenger Chassis Intended for 30-seater Bodies THE stand of the Saurer Commercial Vehicle Co., Ltd., at the. Olympia Show this year will be' rendered 'particularly interesting by the introduction of two new models, one a Diesel-engined chassis and the other a new petrolengined passenger chassis, the power units in both eases being six-cylindered.

Experienced operators of the heavier

• class of road vehicle are sure to devote considerable attention to the Diesel engines on view, and we are glad to be able to give them some details (4. the new unit employed in the Saurer 6BLD chassis. The bore is 110 mm. and the stroke .150 mm., the output at 1,600 r.p.m. 'being 80 b.h.p.• The cylinder block is cast in. one with the .crankcase, casehardened steel sleeves being used for the cylinder bores. Steel air chambers are fitted into the detachable head and the overhead valves are pushrod-operated from acamshaft which runs in oil in the crankcase.

,Fuel is injected by a Bosch injector pump and nozzles, one injector being employed per cylinder. A governor is incorporated which regulates the idling speed as well as that under full load. Needless to . say, there Is pressure lubrication to all important, working parts, the gear-type pump being located at the bottom of: the timing ease: The separate oil sump is easily detachable. The cooling, water is circulated by a water Immo and the positively driven fan incorporates a friction clutch ; tha engine is three-point suspended in rubber bushes.

The four-speed gearbox forms a unit with the engin6 and has central control. A feature is that the gearbox contains the fully enclosed clutch-withdrawal gear and a rear universal joint, so that these components are protected from dust and water and their lubrication is ensured ; the clutch, incidentally, is of the multiple-dry-plate type.

The drive is conveYed by a two-piece shaft to the full-floating rear, axle, which has a single-reduction bevel gear, the final drive being easily detachable as a unit from the aXie case. Vacuumoperated four-wheel brakes are fittedto the Saurer-Simplex wheels, which, by the way, have laterally split rims intended for 40-in: by 8-in, pneumatic tyres. The springs are of the semielliptic type with rubber shackle bushes, the drive being taken by the rear springs

As a supplement to the four-speed gearbox a special overdrive may be fitted at an extra expense of £70, the price of the standard 'chassis being £1,550. Instead of the 16-ft .4-in. wheelbase, a wheelbase of 44 ft. 9 ins. can be given, the track in each 'ease

being 8 ft. 1 in. front and 5 ft. 9 ins. rear. For trailer-haulage work a backaxle ratio of 8.59 is standardized, this giving a top-gear speed of 32 m.p.h.

The new passenger chassis has a monobloc six-cylindered petrol engine of 100 mm. bore and 130 mm. stroke, developing 75 b.h.p. at 1,600 r.p.m. Casehardened-steel cylinder barrels are fitted and the cylinder head, carrying the valves and part of the valve gear, is detachable. The casting of the cylinder block integrally with , the crankcase follows the practice employed in the -Diesel-type engine. The carburetter is of the Saurer pattern with exhaust heating device and air filter, ignition being by , Scintilla, magneto, which forms a unit With the 12-volt dynamo.

Pressure lubrication is supplied by an oil pump of the spur-wheel kind located at the bottom of the timing case, and the oil sump is easily detachable. The cooling water is circulated by a pump, as in the model described, and here, again, the fan is positively driven through a friction clutch.

The engine and four-speed gearbox form a unit which is suspended at three points in rubber bushes, the clutch and transmission details being similar to those of the 6BLD model. In addition to vacuum-brake operation there is the well-known Saurer, engine brake. A gearbox-driven tyre pump is fitted. The price of this chassis is £1,075, or with special overdrive £50 -extra. The wheelbase is 16, ft. 4 ins, front track 5 ft. 74ins., rear track 5 ft. 3 ins., and overall length 25 ft. The frame height under load is 2 ft. 4 ins. and the vehicle has a turning circle of 44 ft. 6 ins. To suit particular requirements a final-drive reduction of either 53 to 8 or 53 to 10 can he given, the maximum speed with the lower ratio being 49.1 m.p.h. when the fifth gear is fitted.
