Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• The turbocharged Perkins 6.354 six-cylinder diesel becomes the standard power unit in the Dodge KP.700 two-axle tractor, with a plated gross weight of 20 tons, and the Dodge KP.850 tractor, which has a plated gross weight of 22 tons, Chrysler announced yesterday.

It will also be available as a production option in the 16-ton Dodge K.1050 twoaxle rigid truck, which makes Chrysler the first manufacturer to offer this engine in the high volume maximum capacity two-axle rigid market.

The turbocharged 6.354 is claimed to have a net installed output in the Dodge trucks of 149.5 bhp. It has been designed to fill the power gap between the naturally aspirated 6.354 and the big V8.510.

Although it is derived from the existing base unit, the new engine has many features intended to ensure durability and longevity at the higher output, including an all-new strengthened cylinder head and block, locking tappet covers on one side of the block and having strong vertical fluting on the other.

Internal features of the turbocharged unit include a twin outlet water pump. oil spray piston cooling and copper sleeved injectors, contributing to a reduction in engine temperatures and a consequen increase in engine life.

To cater for the demands of motorway operation, a new four-ring pack cuts down frictional losses, while top ring groove protection also reduces wear. Other fundamental design features include a high-speed valve assembly, a new lubricating oil pump with larger capacity and a nitrided crankshaft.

The Dodge KP.700 two-axle tractive unit will be priced at £2990 with the new engine (chassis and cab) and the KP.850 at £3393. . As a production option on the K.1050 it will cost £250, but in normal operation the extra power obviates the need for a two-speed axle fitted with the standard 6.354, so that the effective option price is £130.
