Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• The results of this year's St Austell LDoY eliminator, which took place last Sunday, bear a remarkable resemblance to last year's score chart. A corporal from RAF St Mawgan, J. Barlow, won Class B and took the supreme champion award, repeating the 1971 performance of Cpl Panter. Class E first and second placemen, H. L. Richards and M. Brockenshire, identically repeated their 1971 placings while second and third placemen last year in Class G split up and won Classes F and G respectively on Sunday.

Class A, too, was very much of a repeat performance with last year's first and second placemen W. Perry and W. H. Sired taking second and third places behind their colleague D. C. Holman from Plymouth Post Office.

Fresh ground was broken at St Austell by the entry (believed to be for the first time in the history of the LDoY) of a local fire brigade vehicle whose driver, I. Sheer, did well on his exploratory mission by taking second place in Class B and winning a local prize for the best driver of a BMC vehicle. Another out-of-the-run entry was a refuse collection vehicle from the local authority driven into third place in Class C by W. Wickett.

St Austell Brewery Co Ltd was more successful than last year and so, too, was Heavy Transport Co Ltd whose performance on this occasion was not interrupted by the South Wales BRSL men. Its drivers won the four artic classes, including clean sweeps in E and G, and also won Class D for the big rigids.

The change in the marking system which creates heavier penalties on the manoeuvring tests resulted in the downfall of many competitors, especially on test 1, but nobody suffered more than Jack Govier of BRSL South Wales, winner Class G last year, and a hot favourite for a repetition. He got to test 1, with a clean slate on the road route, Highway Code, distance judging and surprise questions, only to touch the barrier and put 210 points on his sheet. He was almost faultless in tests two and three and but for the slip would have incurred well under 100 marks — the irony of trying to do be than the RAF man's almost fault] performance on this test.
