tions can be put to a variety of purposes and can refer to past, present or future costs. Items such as licence excise and insurance premium can be ascertained beforehand and costed accurately. Items such as tyres and maintenance, however, depend on a variety of factors some of which are peculiar to a particular operator and vary accordingly.

A newcomer, therefore, will be well advised to make use of the figures shown in the COMMERCIAL MOTOR Tables of Operating Costs, in respect of the type of vehicle he operates for an initial period. At the same time, however, he will record the actual expenditure on the two items of tyres and maintenance for a sufficient period to give a fair average result in terms of costs per mile. These can then be compared with the standard figures taken from the Table and adjusted accordingly, if necessary.
