TO meet rapidly increasing demand for bio-active animal feeds, Pattullo Higgs and Co. Ltd., Hayes, Kent, operates a new Foden 26-ton g.v.w. eight-wheeler, model 8X6/26, fitted with a Pengco dual-purpose tipping body. By replacing two smaller units and handling palletized loads, it has doubled efficiency and cut loading/unloading time from 90 to 20 minutes.
The tipper makes a daily delivery/collection run between Diss, Norfolk, and Faversham, Kent or Wadhurst, Sussex depots. It takes 15+ tons of bulk grain from Kent to W. F. Tuck and Sons Ltd. at Diss in the 24 ft-long Pengco body. This has triple dropsides, 2 ft. 3 in. high with 2 ft-high hinged extensions.
Speedy discharge
The body features an integral sub-frame with close pitched outriggers. Longitudinals nest alongside the vehicle chassis reducing overall height by 4 in. compared with conventional bodies. Tubular cross bracers eliminate lateral distortion.
A 45° tipping angle from twin Edbro 6CAN rams effects speedy discharge of grain through a lever-operated 12 in.-square hopper in the tailboard. Fifteen tons of bagged bio-active feeds are loaded on pallets using pedestrian-operated Yale Worksaver fork-lift trucks. The tipper carries 12 pallets, each one holding 40 bags.
Overnight run
The tipper is used up to 20 hours each day. It makes an overnight run to Diss, leaving Faversham or Wadhurst at early evening and returning early the following morning. A second driver takes over to deliver large quantities of bagged feeds to farms in the locality and fills the body with grain ready for the overnight run.
Pattullo Higgs also operates two Leyland Super Comets with Pengco tipper bodies on other delivery/collection runs.
