Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Mansfield (Notts.) Town Council has the purehase of a motor fire-engine under consideration, and Rawtenstall Town Council (Lancs.) is similarly occupied.

:Kirkcaldy District Committee has a. sub-yommittee sitting, in connection with the probable purchase of firesaying appliances; including a motor fire-engine, in conjunction with certain burghs.

The new Dennis engine at Worthing, has caused a. spirit of reposeful confidence to come over the residents in the neighbouring villages of Goring, notion, Durrington, Sompting, Lancing, and others. The sooner terms are settled the better.

L.C.C. Requirements.

The Fire Brigade Committee of the L.C.0 reports that it is desirable that arrangements should be made with a view to the ordering of the motor appliances, in respect of which provision was made in the draft estimates for the current financial year, as soon as possible. The appliances in question consist of five petrol motor lireengines and six motor (escape) vans; in addition, a sum has been included in the draft estimates for th.e payment of the cost of a steam motor fire-engine, ordered some time ago but. not accepted, or for the purchase of another motor engine in its place. In view of the heavy cost of maintenance of the steam motor fire-engines in the brigade, and of the superior efficiency of the petrol motor fire-en

gines, the Committee is also .considering the advisability of obtaining two new petrol engines in place of two of the steam motor engines which are at present in use in the brigade.

Arrangements have, therefore, to be made for the purchase of not exceeding eight petrol motor engines, and not exceeding six motor (escape) vans, and it is intended to ask tenderers to quote for delivery of the first appliance within four months of the date of the order to commence, and of any further appliances (should more than one be ordered at the same time) at intervals of one month afterwards. The tenderers, in order that. all these appliances may be obtained before the end of the financial year, are to be asked to quote alternative prices for one, two, three or four motor engines, and one, two or three motor (escape).• vans. As a. result of certain tests carried out in the brigade, it appears that a.n electrieally-driyen appliance could usefully take the place of a petrol driven motor (escape) van in a locality where there are no steep gradients, and that such a machine would be far-more economical to maintain. The Committee intends that the tenders for motor (escape) vans shall, therefore, be both for petrol-drivem and electrically-driven vans.
