Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Random roadside testing with tougher penalties for truck drivers found guilty of drink-driving should be part of the Government's plan to reduce road accidents, says Commercial Motor.

In its response to the Government's consultation paper Combating Drink Driving, CM argues that the police should be allowed to carry out random roadside testing, including more checks on truck drivers.

CM also believes that at the end of a drink-driving licence ban, the waiting period before an HGV licence is returned should be extended to at least six months following a First offence. This should rise to a year for drivers found guilty of a second offence. We support an educational campaign on the dangers of drink-driving, targeted at both drivers and employers. However, CM has reminded the Government that lorry drivers have a lower-than-average rate for failing drink-driving tests.
