Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

This year's show was smaller but was it still worth visiting. Colin Sowman finds out ...

• This year's Automotive Aftermarket Show, at the Wembley exhibition complex, had a few exhibits for the CV repairer among the usual crop of ideas.

First among these was offerings from Sykes Pickavant subsidiary AM Test Systems (Turbo 65 Tel: 0253 780780 Fax: 0253 714892). it showed a bench-mounted diesel injector tester and two opacity smoke meters.

An injector is placed in the ZE 470/400 tester and a hand pump is used to build and check the opening pressure (up to 400 bar), then the spray pattern can be viewed.

AM's opacity smoke meters comprise a full flow version and a partial flow design. Partial flow is recommended up to 3.5 tonnes and full flow above that. Both produce printouts of five free acceleration tests (being updated to 10). The highest and lowest readings are discarded and the remaining results are averaged. Both units are said to be self-calibrating and read out in percentages or K units.

A range of Danish washing equipment was being shown for the first time by Klinett (Turbo 66 Tel: 0737 241905 Fax: 0737 223286). The range includes pressures washers powered by diesel, three and single-phase electricity. All the machines are fitted with quickrelease hoses allowing extensions to be added easily.

Also in the range is the 288 brake cleaner. This portable 22-litre capacity machine sprays the work area with a hot chemical/water mix. Klinett is offering a fixed-price service contract. For £185 plus VAT it will carry out two services a year on its machines and cover up to 10 call-outs per year free of parts or labour costs.

Reed Automotive (Turbo 67 Tel: 0993 778711 Fax: 0993 778951) was displaying its Rope Ratchet and Engine Restore, an oil additive. Rope Ratchet is useful for securing items in a breakdown vehicle, for example. The rope has one attached hook and another hook is on the ratcheting pulley block When the free end of the rope is pulled to secure an item, the ratchet will not allow it to loosen until the release catch is pushed upwards. Rope Ratchet comes with two metres of 70kg (1501b) breaking strain rope and cost £4.99 retail.

Engine Restore engine oil additive is said to restore engine compression by filling in small scratches that appear in pistons and cylinder wails, says the company. A one-litre can will treat sumps up to 15 litres and most trucks would require two litres, Retail price for one litre is £35 with an unsatisfaction money-hack guarantee.

To stop bolts and sockets falling into inaccessible areas of a vehicle while working they can be contained in the magnetic dish marketed by Buffalo Tools (Turbo 68 Tel: 0384 480490 Fax: 0384 480491). The dish sticks to any steel vehicle panel and has a rubber covered magnetic base so as not to damage paintwork. Nuts, bolts and sockets dropped in are held magnetically in the dish.

Devilbiss (Turbo 69 Tel: 0202 571111 Fax: 0202 573488) used the show to introduce its gravity-fed and pressurised cup-fed HVLP spray guns. These operate with a spraying pressure of 0.7bar (10 psi) and have a transfer efficiency of between 65% and 67%, says the company. (Above 60% is specified by the Environmental Protection

Act.) Inlet air requirements are 0.5m3/min (18cfm) at 1.7 bar.

There are a range of air caps, tips and needles which allow the guns to use all types of paint from heavy primers to solid base coats. Prices start from £240 and each gun has an air cap pressure setting gauge.

Spraytek (Turbo 70 Tel: 0234 350357 Fax: 0234 273626) exhibited a modular build combination spray booths. Commercial vehicle booths up to 5m x 5m can he constructed to any length. The door sealing system allows the booth to work under negative pressure (as required by the EPA). There is a triple filtration system in the booths with a 250kg charcoal filter being specified for CV booths. When this filter has absorbed 125kg of solvent, Spraytek will change the element and recycle the charcoal.

Three filters

The need for pollution-free breathing air when welding or sanding bodywork while retaining manoeuvrability has been addressed by Martindale (Turbo 71 Tel: 081 450 8561 Fax: 081 450 4794). Its portable system fits on the operators' hack Filtered air from up to three filters is fed to the face mask by a pump running off rechargeable batteries.
