• As Workshop goes to press the Vehicle Inspectorate (VI) is due to publish its specification for exhaust testing equipment on di eselengined vehicles over 3.5 tonnes.
The opacity meters will be used for the free acceleration smoke test that comes into force in September.
The smoke test will be carried out outside VI test stations: it will comprise up to 10 accelerations from idle to governed speed.
The highest of the first four readings will be disregarded. lithe average of the rest is below 3.2 m K units 175 Hartridge) the vehicle will pass. Otherwise up to 10 accelerations can be performed to get three consecutive ones that will pass the test.
Smoke emission tests on dieselengined light commercial vehicles (below 3.5 tonnes) are due to be introduced into the MoT in January 1993. but the limits and test procedure for these have yet to be finalised.
