• Sales of tractive units and eight-wheelers are up for the first 20 days of February, say industry sources.
But they advise caution in treating the figures as a sign of a long-term sales upswing.
Sales of four-axle rigids rose by about 70% compared with the same period last year and tractor sales are up by 18%, However, figures for two and three-axle vehicles in the 15 tonne plus sector still indicate a downward trend.
The rise in tractor sales could be due to a rush by customers to buy before ABS becomes compulsory at the end of March.
The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders' statistics for sales of commercial vehicles for the whole of February are out this week — and the SMMT also warns that 20-day figures can be misleading.
