• Plans for a toll motorway running parallel to the M6 between Birmingham and Manchester have been scrapped in favour of a £450m extension of the existing motorway to eight lanes.
Transport Secretary Malcolm Rifkind told the Commons last week that the road has been ditched for "a variety of reasons, ranging from environmental to operational". An earlier report from accountant Coopers Lybrand 8z DeLoite. claimed that construction firms had been deterred by toll limits. It is the first toll road to be dropped from the Government's n5bn roads privatisation programme,
