WITH THE rapid increase in haulage costs during the past few years, many operators have turned to Brittany Ferries because this line lands lorries so much closer to the industrial areas of South West France and Spain. Now the line is celebrating its 10th anniversary; the first trip was made from Roscoff to Plymouth with a converted tank landing-craft.
The company is the brainchild of a Breton farming cooperative. Today it operates between Portsmouth/St Maio, Plymouth/Roscoff, Plymouth/Santander, and Cork/Roscoff. By the end of last year it had carried 27,000 commercial vehicles, plus 148,500 cars and 800,000 passengers.
