Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

CONTROVERSY has broken out in Strathclyde following the leak of a document which suggests massive public transport cuts and the closure of Glasgow's recently modernised underground railway.

The document, which Strathclyde PTE insists is only one of several options and which it has not yet submitted to councillors for consideration, discusses the high level of subsidy paid to rail services in the region.

It points out that the five per cent subsidy paid to Scottish Bus Group and 22 per cent paid to PTE buses in Glasgow cornpares with 56 per cent to British Rail and 70 per cent to the underground.

The document, which appeared last week in two Glasgow newspapers, says there is a case for closing a substantial proportion of the Trans-Clyde rail network, and for either increasing underground fares or closing it altogether.

It also suggests that relatively high bus fares charged in Glasgow should be reduced to attract more business although city buses are also threatened.

• Greater Manchester Council is considering three long-term options to improve public transport.

These are for either surface or underground light rapid transit, conventional trains, or busways.
