LOSSES of E100,000 a week were reported by the Scottish Bus Group to the Scottish Traffic Commissioners last week.

The Commissioners approved an application by the Group to increase its fares by up to 20 per cent on Sunday.

The decision came on the second day of the hearing in Edinburgh. The Group's last increases came into operation on March 16 last year, while there were three rises in 1974 —in April, August and October.

The Bus Group claimed at the hearing that without higher fares it was heading for a loss this year of £5.4m. Mr James Dalgetty, chairman of the Commissioners, said : "Having pondered the matter as carefully as we could, we feel duty bound to accept that the Scottish Bus Group would be in a perilous position if the increases were not granted.

It seems to us obvious that there will simply be a loss on the group's undertaking which may result in new and more serious increases in fares in the future."

The increases will mean 15 per cent on fares up to 16p, 20 per cent on fares of 18p and over, with fares of 73p and over being rounded up to the nearest 5p, equivalent to a 20 per cent rise.

Mr K. J. Cameron, QC, for the Scottish Bus Group, which claimed that it required the rises to produce "a very modest surplus" of £1.3m, said there was no evidence that the increases were unreasonable.

The principal objection, he said, was one of hardship to sections of the community, especially pensioners and scholars.
