Mrs Brenda Siddall became the second woman in the history of the Road Haulage Association to become an area secretary when she took over this week from Brian Elliott at South Yorkshire (Sheffield) area. Mr Elliott will be taking up another appointment within the RHA. Mrs Siddall, since June 1969 the assistant secretary for the area, first entered the office in 1947 at the age of 16 as an office junior, and has worked for the Association continually since that date apart from an absence of some five years while her daughter was young. Joyce having resigned from the board and their offices as chairman and deputy chairman respectively. P. H. R. Turner continues as an assistant managing director. Mr Turner was RHA chairman 1966-68.

K. Holmes, assistant general manager of the Northern General Group of Companies since July 1970 and for four years before that NG traffic manager. has been appointed general manager of Western Welsh, which includes Rhondda Transport, in succession to I. L. Gray. Mr Gray retires on April 30 after 47 years in the 'bus industry.

Elections L. Carswell (James and Geo. H. Matthews Ltd, Wickford) has been elected chairman of the London and Home Counties division of the Freight Transport Association; T. A. Jenkinson (James Latham Ltd, E5) is vicechairman; D. A. Burnham (Yardley of London Ltd, Basildon) secretary.

Robert A. Fryers, 50, has been appointed technical director of British Leyland's truck and bus division—a newly created post— and assumes control of all engineering activities. Mr Fryars was previously divisional chief engineer. PeterJ. Redfern, 37. becomes divisional sales director—another new post— and takes responsibility for the sale in the UK of all trucks, buses and power systems products. He will also provide sales support on a worldwide basis as required by British Leyland International. Mr Redfern retains his sales directorship of Scammell Lorries Ltd. Robert E. I. Turner, 40, becomes marketing director and is responsible for the marketing of trucks, buses and power systems products in the UK as well as providing marketing support on a worldwide basis. Mr Turner succeeds Brian Shepherd who resigned last year owing to ill health and is now with J. H. Sparshatt. All three new directors are responsible to divisional managing director Ronald Ellis. Consequent upon the appointment of Mr Fryers as technical director, Michael Dunn, 35, takes over as chief engineer and will be answerable to Mr Fryars for all forward design and development. Mr Dunn is executive director and chief engineer of Leyland Motors and will retain these responsibilities. He has already been closely connected with the division's forward planning, particularly the Leyland National bus. John Davidson has been appointed divisional service manager and is responsible for the co-ordination of all service activities within the division. He was previously service manager at Leyland Scotland. Six men from the home sales force have joined the truck and bus fleet sales department and will be responsible to G. Bart Taylor, fleet sales manager. The men are: E. M. B. Stewart (north-west), D. Smith (north-east), J. Cambridge (midland), E. W. Braharn (eastern), N. D. Andrews (south-east). and E. R. Day (southwest). New zone managers appointed to the North Western and Eastern zones are C. "Mike" Price-Owen (north-west) and Peter Durnforci (eastern): both men were previously deputy zone managers and before that regional managers for AEC in the same areas.
