Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

REPLEX "Air Poise" and electronic wheel-balancing equipment comes from the . Australian organization, Repco Ltd., which points out that 20 per cent of tyre life can be lost because wheels are out of balance, yet this can be remedied in a matter of minutes.

A wheel can be dealt with in less than four minutes with the Air Poise model 486, which is completely portable and balances commercial-size tyres off the vehicle. It has a cast base mounted on three castors for mobility. A column is formed by an air cylinder, which retracts into the base when not being used. The unit then presents a tow height for the wheel to be lowered on to the balancer and the castors allow the unit to be positioned in the wheel centrehole.

The hand control is then operated and air pressure extends the column, lifting the wheel off the ground and bringing the "Air Poise" seat into operation to enable the wheel to be balanced. A large-diameter bubble gives easy reading for quickassessment of weight required. " Perma-Grip " weights are patented spring-steel clips in lightand heavy-section rim grades, which can be cut to fine adjustment by reading the weight increments on the clip, The "Air Poise" is made under licence to G. T. Hemmeter, U.S.A., and will, it is claimed, balance a 300-16. wheel and tyre assembly to within 1 oz. Air pressure required is approx. 100 psi., cylinder lift is 5 in, and weight 68 lb. An adapter for accurate mounting on the tapzred cone of the balancing machine is adjustable tO hold wheel centres from 4in. to 11 in. A special adapter for spider or spoked wheels is also available.

The Replex electronic balancer is operated on the vehicle by jacking a wheel clear of the floor and spinning it with a mobile drive unit. Out-of-balance is picked up by the vibration pick-up head and relayed to an electronic unit which is housed in a cabinet and comprises the electronic amplifier, the stroboscopic flash lamp (which indicates where weights should be fitted) and the " unbalance " meter. Pick-up head and leads are stored in the cabinet. The motor' unit simulates speeds up to 100 mph. The Model 400 electronic unit covers all sizes of wheel, the wheel-spinner Model 411 which has a 3 h.p. 3-phase electric motor, a cast aluminium base and rubber-tyred wheels, being designed for commercial-vehicle wheel balancing.
