THE Danish Optoflex system of wheel alignment equipment marketed by this concern measures camber, castor, king-pin inclination, toe-in, toe-out and toe-out on turns. Large images thrown on to screens by optical projectors show graphically the exact condition of the steering linkage and wheels_ The light projectors used in the system are made of plastics, the 12-V current required to operate them being obtained from a transformer built into the background. Internal construction of the projectors is of die castings which form a strong box girder. The makers claim that the builtin pointer and scales are always exact and never need adjustment. The wheel clamps allow the projectors to be securely attached to the rim of the wheel: the standard wheel clamps fit wheels of diameters from 12 to 20 in. Extra length rods are available for use with commercial vehicles.

Churchill recommends a pit installation for Optoflex—this makes access to adjustment points much easier—but adds that a floor installation is quite satisfactory. Where a floor installation is used it is desirable for the turntables to be sunk into the floor, with level runways on which the vehicle can rest. This system can be used to check rear-wheel alignment; for measurements of rear-wheel toe-in a special set of measuring scales can be supplied to order to meet individual requirements.
