Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Hammersmith House, London, W.6.

A /s1YONE whose work involves welding El or cutting metal will know what the initials B.O.C. stand for, and to detail fully the wide range of welding equipment made by this company would fill several books. Gas welding equipment is sold under the B.O.C. name, whilst electric welding plant hears the Quasi-Arc name. In the former category there are blowpipes, , regulators, nozzles, accessories and welding rods z.nd fluxes, whilst in the latter there is plant for straightforward arc welding as well as for processes such as Argonarc, MIG, Tubarc and other special processes.

So far as the vehicle repair workshop is concerned there are two gas-welding sets-the Saffire and the Firefly—which can do almost everything in the welding line that

is likely to be encountered. These are the names given to the welding torches and they are combined in complete outfits which come complete with hoses, regulators, cylinder trolleys and accessories. The Saffire Motor Engineer's outfit is designed to meet the requirements of fleet operators and garages engaged in general repair and vehicle bodywork. It will weld up to 0.1875 in. (up to 1 in. with additional nozzles) and cut 2-in.-thick mild steel. In addition to the blowpipe, the set includes 13 nozzles for welding, radiator welding, cutting and heating, plus cutting attachments and other accessories.

The Firefly Ultra-Lightweight combined outfit is a less expensive set and is designed for intermittent repair work. It is based on the 12-oz. Firefly blow torch and the outfit will weld up to 0.25-in, and cut up to 0.75-in, mild steel according to the nozzle fitted. The Firefly outfit includes eight nozzles, nozzle cleaners, goggles and other items.

A very good arc welder for the fleet workshop is the Quasi-Arc LD.180 a.c. set. This is a versatile machine and can be used on 2201240-V mains or across two lines of 400/440-V three-phase supplies. Two welding-current ranges are available in the machine. One is from 20 to 180 amp, at 50-V open circuit and the other from 30 to 140 amp. at 80-V open circuit. Current selection is made with two spring-loaded roller switches, each with six positions giving 36 different current settings. Electrode sizes from 16 to 8 s.w.g. can be deposited.

The LD.180 is an air-cooled unit and measures 1 ft. 10-5 in. by 1 ft. 8 in. by 11.5 in. It is not mounted on wheels and weighs 230 lb. with oil.

Two other Quasi-Arc welding sets are the .ACP 200 and ACP 200C. The former is a lightweight, air-cooled a.c. transformer unit for sheet-metal welding and general repair work. This set is fitted for electrode sizes from 16 to 8 s.w.g. and the welding current range is from 20 to 200 amp. with open circuit voltages of 60 and 90. The ACP 200C, which is similar, can be supplied including a condenser for power-factory improvement. The MFV 225 motor-generator d.c. welding set is a small, compact machine designed to operate at 3,000 r.o.m. It also incorporates a mechanical power take-off for flexible-drive tools and a 40-V, 10-amp. ancillary supply for electric tools. Electrode sizes of from 16 to 6 s.w.g. can be used at currents of 20 to 225 amp., with open circuit voltages of 40 and 60 V. Both these sets include accessories such as electrode holder, earth clamp cable and head and hand screens. Electrodes suitable for every possible requirement are sold by B.O.C., one of the most popular for vehicle work being Mirrospeed, which is a good allpurpose rod.

Of the special welding techniques geveloped in the past few years the one finding great favour now is the MIG gasshielded-arc system. The Lynx It has been specially developed for fine-wire welding, using CO, and Argomix as the gas shield.
