The answer is impressive: In addition to checking public service vehicles, goods vehicles and cars and carrying out inspections of testing stations appointed to check older cars and light commercial vehicles with a capacity of 30 cwt. or less, Ministry of Transport vehicle examiners act as consultants to the Traffic Commissioners; are responsible for reporting on design faults: test drivers for p.s.v. licences and check routes of Proposed new services to establish' the Suitability of operating double-deckers; deal with trunk road claims for damage caused by large pot holes. sewer settlement, ruts and so on; attend police courts to give evidence on questions relating to yehicle condition and road accidents..
They also inspect the premises,, maintenance facilities and vehicles on the premises of goods vehicle operators, and make a point of doing so, other work permitting, when an operator is applying to the Licensing Authority for renewal or variation of a licence, a report being sent to the L.A. on the operator's standard of maintenance.
Whilst the annual inspection of p.s.v. run by large and Sinall undertakings normally eau be arranged in depot, vehicle
examiners.' also spot-check' p.s.v. at garages or at termini. Additionally, goods vehicles are inspedted when parked by the roadside or in markets and so. on (without police assistance) and at the roadside daring spot checks after they have been stopped by the

The • records of ...testing _.stations . are inspected twice a year'and checks are made' of brake meters. which have to be recertified by the manufacturers biannually. Inspections are also made of testing-station facilities and -equipment as required by the Motor Vehicle Test Regulations.
In the East Midland traffic area, goods vehicles total about 120.000 and p.s.v. number more than 5.500, whilst there are approximately 2.000 testing stations. The area has been sub-divided into 22 districts. each supervised by avehicle examiner, and covers the whole of Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire:Leicestershire, Rutland.. Northamptonshire and Oxfordshire' and a major part of Derbyshire and Buckinghatrishire.
A national policy meeting is held, tWice a year in London under the chairmanship of the chief mechanical engineer of he Ministry of Transport and this is attended by the area intehartical engineers from all traffic areas who are responsible for the work undertaken by the vehicle examiners.
