for 32 tons gross
THOUGHT to be the first articulated I tipper built to operate at the new 32-ton-g.v.w. limit, this Atkinson-Dyson outfit (right) has just been put into service by Wnt. Dobson Ltd., of Edinburgh.
The Atkinson six-wheeled tractive unit and the Dyson D.N.R. Newloader. trailer together weigh about 12 tons, enabling a nominal 20-ton payload to be carried. Weight-saving factors are the use of • an aluminium alloy body, the fitting throughout of Michelin " X " tubeless tyres and the use of a chassis frame requiring no extra bracing.
The rear end of the chassis is swept down tO give a tow pivot point and the longitudinalbody bearers run alongside the main chassis members instead of resting on them. This means that, although the body is 5 ft deep and the 'fifth-wheel is higher on a three-axle. unit than on a two-axle model, the overall unladen height is only 10 ft. II in, at the rear and 10ft. 6+ in. at the front,
The Atkinson is a T3266.0 with a Cummins NH.220 in-line diesel, a ZF. AK6-75 direct-top gearbox and doubledrive axles with lockable third differential.
The semi-trailer carries MilShaw twinram tipping gear and a rack and .pinion stabilizer; the alloy body has a trip-hung tailgate . 3 ft. 6 in. deep,.' above it being a solid-panelled 18 in. section which 'adds
to 'rigidity. Brakes are • 15 in by 7 in. Scam and the whole outfit has a three,
line air system, .
The outfit, which is 38 ft. 5 in. long. is being used to carry coal from Dilston Glen Colliery to BUtlerfield, about 10 miles away..
