Some Substantial Purchases in This Week's Batch of 46

AMONG the 46 transport units, purchases of which are reported on these pages, is one of 29 vehicle and premises in London. The former owners of the business have succeeded in recovering it and will continue where they !eft off on nationalization.

Another London operator who has acquired 12 vehicles from British Road Services says that they are already making a great deal of money.

A concern in the East Midlands has bought four units totalling 18 vehicles, to bring the fleet to an aggregate of 60.

• In South Wales, a concern of fruit importers is forming a transport subsidiary with vehicles bought from the British Transport Commission, SCOTLAND D. M. Smith (Transport), Ltd., lia've acquired from B.R.S. premises and vehicles at 180-186 Stewarton Street, Wishaw. As from March 9, they are operating a national service, running to London and linking up with other English towns. They have taken over 10 vehicles totalling 66 tons payload capacity. Other Scottish operators back in full activity include J. Barrie (Contractor), Ltd., 31 Dunblane Street, Glasgow; Mr. R. Wright, 60 Candleriggs, Glasgow : Mr. W. Cunningham, 48 John Street, Dunoon, and Mr. R. Davidson, 1193 Gallowgate, Glasgow. ,

The Scottish Licensing Authority has granted special A licences to Mr, R. H. Johnston, Renfrew, for two vehicles (5 tons unladen), Mr. D. I. tvIalcoLm, Johnstone, four Bedford 5-ton platform vehicles, and Moore's Motors (Ayr), Ltd., Ayr, one vehicle (3 tons).

Peter Hastie, Ltd., 100 King's Park Road, Glasgow. 5.4. have bought two Morris-Commercial 5-6-tonners of 1952 vintage from the Douglas Group, Glasgow. of B.R.S. They formerly had 21 vehicles. No new services will be undertaken by Messrs. W. Simpson and Sons, 26 Moness Drive, Glasgow, who have acquired four Austin long-wheelbase platform 5-6-tonners from the Ceettbridge depot of B.R.S. Isaac Barrie, Ltd.. 365 Dalmarnock Road, Glasgow, S.E., a familiar name, have also bought two vehicles, and Mr. Frank Moncrieff, 4 Grange Road, Alloa, four. comprising a Foden 10-tonner, two Vulcan 7-tonners and an Austin 6-toriner, formerly based at Leven. Mr. Moncrieff is to run a service from Alicia to London, Liverpool and Hull.

Unconfirmed reports state that Oswald Transport, Trabhoch, Mauchline, have purchased four vehicles, A Morris-Commercial 5-ton platform lorry has been acquired by Mr. John Mackirdy, 30 Bishop Street. Rothesay, Isle of Bute, from the B.R.S. at Glasgow. He already has two vehicles engaged in the transport of livestock, NORTH-WEST Apart from acquisitions already announced in The Commercial Motor, the North Western Licensing Authority has grained special A licences to the following :—Poplar Motor Services (J. Radford, snr„ and J. Radford. jnr.), Poplar Garage, Koutsford Road, Bradley Brook, near Lymm, for two vehicles (1Ii tons unladen); J. and G. Rothwell, Ltd., 403 Manchester Road, Baxenden. near Accrington, one vehicle (3 tons)—based at Blake St., Accrington; J. Billing. Ltd.. Grimeford Garage, Blackrod, four vehicles (191 tons) and three trailers; J. Griffiths and Son. Ltd_ 14 Tithebam Street, Liverpool, 2, one vehicle (71 tons); Pownall Bros., 3 Lowe Street, Golborne, Warrington, one vehicle (21 tons); Liverpool Warehousing Co., Ltd., c 10

YORKSHIRE

In the Yorkshire Ira& Area, S. M. Wilson and Sons, Ltd., West Avenue, Balby, Doncaster, have acquired four vehicles, W. L. Roebuck, Ltd., Lawns. wood, Quarry Road East, Heswall, Cheshtre, an articulated outfit based at 1 Watford Road. Leeds, and Mr. G. Robinson, 53 Wakefield Road, Ackworth, near Pontetract, two vehicles.

EAST MIDLANDS Four units (66/586, 66/587. 66/591 and 66/572) have been purchased by I Watts and Sons (Contractors), Ltd., Porchester Road, Thorneywood, Nottingham. Eighteen Seddon, Leyland and Atkinson vehicles are concerned. Two of them are 15tonners, seven l2-tonners, seven 8-tonners and two 6-tonners.

These acquisitions bring the fleet strength to 60, with a carrying capacity from 5 tons to 15 tons. The vehicles comprise tippers, platform lorries and drop-siders. Londan. Bristol, South Wales, Liverpool and Manchester are to be served. Operations with the units began on Monday and were advertised in the local Press.

Unit 66/1696—three vehicles totalling 9 tons unladen—has been taken over by Mr. J. Marsden. of Worksop. The unit was based at Star Garage. Penistone Road, Sheffield

WEST MIDLANDS

H. C. W. Contracts, Ltd.. Wharf Street. Hockley. Birmingham. have bought two 7-tonners, a Seddon and a Commer. The concern was a subsidiary of Walker Bros., Ltd.. of Hoekley. who were acquired by the B.T.C. in October, 1949, and operated 13 vehicles. Short-distance haulage has been continued by H.C.W. Contracts, Ltd„ with four 6-ton vehicles.

Mr. Richard Read, Lorighope. Gloucester. has purchased two Seddon 6tonners. Mr. Read was employed by his brother, Mr. George Read, when the 1atter's concern was nationalized in 1948. He then started his own short-distance haulage business and progressively increased the fleet from one vehicle to seven.

Mrs. J. Wild, Watton Lane, Water Orton, has purchased an E.R.F. six-wheeler Which will be added to her husband's fleet of three Commer tractors and eight semitrailers. Mr. Wild's former fleet of five vehicles was acquiredby the B.T.C. in 1950. These were employed under contract to the Dunlop Rubber Co., Ltd., on deliveries to Scotland.

Mr. I C. Woodall, 385 Tyburn Road. Erdington, has purchased a 21-tonner.

WEST COUNTRY

Unit 66/730, consisting of an articulated 20-ton low-loader formerly used by Pickfords for heavy haulage from Exeter, will be taken over by Mr. E. Tucker, East Reach. Taunton, on Monday afternoon.

SOUTH WALES Most of the South Wales operators whose tenders in List 2 were accepted. have plans for an extension of business. One or two are content with their present arrangements, but others have ideas ranging from a daily service between South Wales and London to a separate longdistance section to an already established business.

One operator is coming hack, after five years of watching British Road Services operate his -fleet from his own yard. He is Mr. Tim Price. of Pontypool, Mon.. who has purchased two 7-ton Commers which were taken over from him in 1949.Mr. Price, who was in transport for 30. years before nationalization, is anxious to return to his previous strength of 15-18. vehicles.

His principal work, which he hopes to regain, was the haulage of glass for Pilkington Bros. (South Wales), Ltd., glass manufacturers. He also intends to restart long-distance haulage when he has built up his new fleet sdfficiently. • Hill's Transport, Dines Posvis, near Cardiff, who also run a luxtiry coach service,, are believed to have secured the largest number of vehieles in the area. Their tenders gained them two Bedford tippers, an Austin tipper, a long-wheelbase Leyland and two similar Bedfords. Hopes "are high that the fleet will be hack to a prenationalintion strength of 26 or more. With nine A licences already, Hill's intend to give extensive coverage.

Two Leyland Octopus eight-wheelers went to Sterlirip (Fruit Importers), Ltd., Merthyr, whose plans include the formation of a transport subsidiary dealing with general work between London and South Wales. The ultimate aim is a fleet of about 10 vehicles.

James Clark (Carriers). Ltd., Cardiff, are going farther. They have opened an office at 157 -ft:Haley Street, London, and intend to run a regular daily service between London and South Wales. They obtained three vehicles in List 2, a Maudslay 14-tonner, a Maudslay 7-8tanner and a Vulcan 8-tonner.

Messrs. John Evans and Sons, Pontyberem, C,arnoarthenshire, have purchased two 7-ton Seddons and are going straight into long-distance work.

Mr. Isaac Caswell, Eureka Place, Ebbw Vale, who owns the oldest-established haulage business in the Western Valleys of Monmouthshire. obtained three 1949 Foden six-wheelers, but intends to stick to steel transport.

S. Harfoot and Sons, Ltd., Casfieland Street, Barry, Glam., also have no set plans for the future of their present fleet or for the additional three Commer 5-ton tippers and the Thornycroft tipper which they have purchased.

LONDON AND HOME COUNTIES One of the biggest purchases yet announced is of the B.R.S. vehicles and premises at 81 Christchurch Way, Greenwich, London, S.E.10. The buyers are P. A. Carter and Sons, Ltd., whose premises at Greenwich, together with 48 vehicles, were acquired by the Commission. Under B.R.S., the number of vehicles has been reduced, and the present purchase is concerned with a fleet of 29, comprised of seven Foden, 17 E.R.F., three Seddon and two others. Some trailers are also incl uded.

Only about eight of those being taken over were in the original fleet, those disposed of by B.R.S. having been replaced by either new or used vehicles. Business before and during nationalization has been concerned with the carriage of cables and machinery, and it is understood that these traffics will continue Co be carried.

Mr. P. A. Carter, who is now residing at Carter's Farms, Court Lodge, Ewhurst, Sussex, informed The CoMf»ercial Motor that his old company will resume operadons on March 18.

Twelve vehicles, for which J. Wright Hire Co., Ltd., 35 Hay Lane, London, N.W.9, have been granted special A licences by the Metropolitan Licensing Authority, are now engaged on general long-distance haulage and, The Commercfal MoSor was informed, " arc earning a lot of money already." The lorries consist of four 1946-48 Bedford-Scammell articulated outfits, five 194449 Dodge and three 1946-48 Bedfords. The company have a

fleet of 60 vehicles operating under C hiring margins and contract A licences.

Mr. H. G. Goobey, 19-21 Old Street, London, E.13, bought four Austin 5-tonnei of 1949 vintage and has assigned two of them to Messrs. H. and J. Nastri, 37 Byron Street, London, E.14. Both operators arc using their purchases on general longdistance haulage and each has a fleet of seven vehicles.

XYZ Transport, Ltd., Hercules Wharf. Orchard Place. London, E.14, have taken over three 1953 Dodge long-wheelbase 6tonners and a similar vehicle of 1946 vintage. They are being used on general haulage, particularly to the Midlands.

Mr. T. H. Cooper, Strand Street Garage, Monkwearmouth, Sunderland, has been granted a licence for six vehicles (16 ton; 11 cwt. unladen), based at 273 Pentonville Road, London, N.1.
