AWAGE increase of about 5 per cent, for workers in, the engineering industry has been recommended by the courts of inquiry which examined the dispute in the industry. The trade unions claimed a 15-per-cent. rise. Neither side is bound by the recommendation.

Some 12,000 employees of Vauxhall Motors, Ltd., will receive an average of 10s. more this week. The award, which will cost an extra £375,000, will affect all hourly and weekly paid workers, and some who are paid monthly.

A Vauxhall spokesman has said that the increase would vary according to the grade of the worker. and added: "This means that the engineering pay award is dealt with as far as we arc concerned. The company is not a member of the employers' federation and is not, therefore, bound by the award, whatever it may be. In accordance with our policy of anticipating such pay awards. however, the management has decided to make this increase now."
