A N appeal by Guildford Borough Council against a decision of the Metropolitan Licensing Authority granting Aldershot and District Traction Co., Ltd., permission to operate double-deck buses along a route from Bellfield's Estate to Guildford has been rejected with costs by the Minister of Transport.

At the inquiry, which was held by Sir Maurice Holmes, Mr. J. R. Leslie, deputy-clerk of the council, said that a diversion of the service was made necessary by an Order of the Minister made on June 19 last year prohibiting the use of double-deckers under the railway bridge in Stoke Road when travelling in a southerly 'direction.

The diversion was not disputed, but the route chosen by the respondents for the diversion was. The council's concern was with public safety, which, he submitted, was endangered by the route in question.

In recommending that the appeal be dismissed, Sir Maurice said he agreed with the Licensing Authority's view that the route was safe for doubledeckers.
