He could not understand the railways' demands for restriction on road transport and be intended to oppose any, further step that was taken in that direction in the House of Commons.

Commercial-motor operators had taught the railways what service to the public meant, commented Mr. P. W. Harper, C.M.U.A. North-Western Division chairman.

Some of the Members of Parliament were painfully ignorant of road-transport matters, declared Mr. E. F. Topham (Manchester Area chairman), hut no body had done more than that of South-East Lanes in educating them.

" An adventure" was the description that one of the Board's officials had applied to the Northern Ireland Transport Board, said Mr. H. Allen. It was amazing.. that bureaucracy could be set .up to create an adventure out of an industry which the operators had built up. If anyone were to be injured by the 1930 and 1933 Acts, it would be the rank and file, and• not the vested interests.

Mr. William Patton, chairman of the joint organization, who presided, welcomed the guests, among whom were Mr. T. Bentham, Mr. E. J. Bentley, Mr. H. H. Lapsley, Councillor Howard Robinson and Mr. A. J. Soper. Appreciative references to the work of Mr. J. S. 'Howarth, secretary of the organization since its inception, were made by several speakers. Over 200 members from a wide area attended,

During the past year the Association dealt with 110 applications for the renewal of excursion and tour licences, which involved preparing 500 sheets of modifications and schedules. In connection with extended tours, 1,074 forms and 2,600 schedules were drawn up: New members during the year numbered 81 and the total now on the register is 608.
