Our anachronistic review in celebration of the universal law...what goes around, comes around.

75 years ago: 5 June 1928

The third annual rally for vehicles using fuels other than petrol was held. It aimed to encourage the use of home-produced fuels. All vehicles propelled by internal combustion engines were permitted on condition that they did not employ a fuel containing more than 50% of imported spirit. Fuel used in previous demonstrations included charcoal, wood and acetylene.

50 years ago: 5 June 1953 Commercial Motor called upon the government to address congestion in London. The move came after the number of extra visitors to the capital for the Coronation had highlighted it was becoming a growing problem. CM said that even an event such as the Lord Mayor's Show, which was confined to a small area of the City, was enough to derange road transport in a 'ripple effect' spreading over many square miles, and that urgent investment was needed to prevent the situation from getting worse.

25 years ago: 2 June 1978 Shop stewards warned London operators that more than 6, 000 truck drivers would take part in a one-day strike every Monday from the following week over a claim for a z5p rise in meal allowances. Metropolitan area Road Haulage Association secretary Deirdre Kohler told CM that the action against an individual would cease as soon as that haulier paid the increase: The object is to get the 25p into an agreement so that, if there is a further limitation on wages, the payment is established for the future and would not be part of any percentage of their wages."
