Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

RENAULT Vehicles Industries has introduced a new gearbox, the B9, for use in heavy commercial vehicles.

This gearbox is currently fitted to Renault's GRH 235 6x4 and GBH 280 6x4 site vehicles and its availability will be extended progressively to all top of the range models.

It is a twin countershaft synchromesh gearbox with eight speeds plus crawler and is designed for rigid vehicles and tractive units having engines of 160 to 300kW (220 to 400bhp) and torque outputs of 1,000 to 1,700Nm (740 to 1250 lb ft).

A development programme is on hand to adapt the B9 for more specialised applications and RVI envisages that the gearbox will in time be available to other lorry manufacturers.

Machined and assembled at RVI's commercial vehicle gearbox plant at Boutheon, near St Etienne, the B9 weighs 316kg (695 lb) and Renault claims that its compact design — the overall length is 878mm (34.6in) — makes it suitable for installation in very short wheelbase vehicles.

The basic four-speed synchromesh gearbox, crawler gear and reverse are contained in the main gearbox, while an auxiliary epicyclic range-change is mounted at the rear.

The shafts and gearwheels are of steel or forged chrome while aluminium is used for the rear cover which houses the airoperated range-change control.

There is an alternative cast iron cover with a bracket which permits the fitting of a Telma retarder.
