Several important new appliances make their appearance at the Institute of Public Cleansing Conference demonstration at The Green, Esplanade Road, Paignton, on June 3.
A steadiy increasing trend towards high compaction is reflected by progress in the use of power rams for discharge instead of reliance being placed on tipping action.
A completely new design of collector from She!yoke and Drewry Ltd. is the Revopak. Among other things, this is intended to offset the increasing cost of labour by raising the rate of collection, but without making additional demands on the operators. As refuse is deposited in the hopper at the rear of this vehicle a swinging plate forces it through an aperture into the inner body, the front of which consists of an inclined moving bulkhead that is designed for the dual purpose of compressing the load evenly throughout the entire body length and also acting as an ejector plate on discharge. The action produces a high degree of compression. The operation is stated to deal effectively with paper and plastic sack systems. The enclosed loading mechanism is powered hydraulically and the main body is fully sealed. Light alloy is used for the body superstructure in order to give the maximum legal payload.
A three-wheeled suction sweeper, specially designed for close work in congested areas and on factory sites, introduced by Me!ford Engineering Ltd. can also travel at normal road speeds on the highway. Fully-floating twin scarifying brushes give a 6ft sweep into the path of the main brush and suction nozzle which transfers the debris into the 1+ Cu. yd. g.r.p. hopper which is hydraulically tipped. There is an atomised waterspray for wet sweeping and all systems are driven by a 700 cc Reliant auxiliary engine.
The Tennant 92 power sweeper (R. S. Stokvis and Sons Ltd) is larger and more powerful than the standard range, this model being claimed to give a 40 per cent reduction in large-area sweeping costs. A floating intake enables it to pick up objects as much as 5 in. in height and it is stated to remove sand, dust and bulky debris without "throw-up". At 10 mph the 66 in. sweeping path represents a coverage of 200,000 sq.ft. an hour.
Hanger Engineering's Eagle Thuro sewer-jetter is a 1,200-gal. self-contained unit mounted on the Ford 0750 chassis fitted with 0800 springs. The three-cylinder pump is capable of delivering 70 gpm at 1,005 psi and is powered by a Ford Series 2700 industrial diesel. Mounted on a hydraulically driven hose reel is a 400 ft. 1-in, bore hose with oil and abrasive resistant cover. For general washing down purposes this is accompanied by 33 ft. of +-in. bore hose, complete with hand gun.
An addition to the range of Glover, Webb and Liversidge is the Musketeer 12/35 Mk II continuous-loading collector which has been produced to meet requests for a small vehicle employing impeller loading. Mounted on a Karrier VC715 chassis, it has a turning circle of only 44 ft. Weight distribution is good and payloads exceeding 4 tons are possible: discharge is by end tipping.
What is claimed to be the only refuse collector incorporating both ram ejection and screw packing is the model from Arenco-Alite Ltd. Various detail improvements have been made, including greater compression and the use of a larger screw.
Ronald Perham Ltd. can now show a 35-40 cu. yd. Shark body designed to meet the needs of local authorities having to operate in restricted surroundings. This smaller type, mounted on a Seddon 121t. 6in. municipal chassis, employs the same design features as the larger standard model, including the mechanically driven drum which is discharged by simply reversing the action. Contents of a full 50-60 cu. yd. body can be ejected in two minutes.
Two new machines come from William Bunce and Son, the first being a small Bunce-Epoke bulk gritter for fitting light lorries and pick-ups. Power is supplied by an independent Honda engine, the material being fed from the hopper to an auger which then feeds the spinner plate. An entirely new power unit is used on the Bunce footpath snowplough for which a number of attachments ranging from grass-cutters to snow-blowers are now available.
Certain new items of equipment are expected from Powell Duffryn Engineering Ltd. The 65 cu. yd. Dumpmaster compaction trailer is on public show for the first time. Capable of operating at 32 tons gtvv, this 39ft frameless trailer with reinforced uni-body construction, has a diesel-operated hydraulic power pack working independently of the tractive unit. Powell Duffryn is introducing the new Static Packslave II for the fast packing of refuse into a detachable container, An innovation by Lacre Ltd. is the introduction of a sweeper particularly suitable for precinct and industrial work. This is the Lacre Module which offers good all-round visibility and a turning circle of only 19ft. Overall dimensions are I Oft 9in, length and 5ft 4in. width. A special feature is the power steering. So as to save frequent journeys to the tip high level discharge can be used, making it possible for debris to be ejected into skips or containers and so enabling the sweeper to continue its operations, Telehoist Ltd. has the new Model 501 Load Lugger with a 16 cu. yd. carrying capacity and a lifting range of up to 22,400 lb. By the use of lighter boom arms, high-pressure rams, new welding techniques and lighter high-tensile components, the weight of this design has been reduced to 4480 lb. as compared with 6720 lb. for the former Model 500.
The 14-AL Lugger, by Vapsco Vehicle and Plant Supply Co. Ltd is similar in principle to the Model 9L which was shown by this company for the first time last year. Vapsco claim to be the first in Britain to produce an articulated "lugger" with a 14-ton payload including container. The spring-loaded hooks allow various lengths of container to be handled by picking up a trip bar anywhere on the hook and guiding it to the correct position. The pick-up arms are designed to withstand severe overloading and are long enough to carry containers of a depth of 6ft. A particularly strong rear jack housing is designed to allow shunting of empty containers without damage to the main structure.
A new Tri-Pak TP10 Combi with 11 cu. yd. skip container is available from Tr-City European Sales Ltd., its particular function being to deal with evariety of waste disposal work that arises at irregular intervals in connection with such affairs as fairs, fetes, conferences and markets. The transportable packer-container system is free-standing and can be set down on any suitable location by a skip-handling vehicle. After filling with compressed refuse the container can be removed and taken to the disposal site with the packer unit left in situ. A further container can then be coupled up to continue the packing process. A 3hp electric motor is fitted as standard but where mains supply is not readily available a separate petrol engine and generator can be supplied.
A fresh range of optional equipment is available for the Blaw Knox Pathmaster 42 sweeper which is powered by a Hillman Imp engine, giving travelling speeds up to 20 mph. Heavy duty polypropylene side brushes, for use in the removal of deep deposits, are among the extras mentioned, others being a water-sweeper system with a 25-gal. tank located on the top of the hopper, and an engine-hour meter.
A feature of the products of John Gibson and Son Ltd. will be the use of power discharge, an example being seen on a BLMC Laird LR1300 fitted with the Gibson C116 /64 continuous-loading collection body. Cladding of the body is in ribbed aluminium sheet which is also used for this rnanfacturer's standard compression body. A versatile little vehicle entitled the Mini-Tug by Atkinson's of Clitheroe Ltd. is intended to cater for a variety of needs—basically it is a miniature chassis to which a number of special bodies can be attached as occasion demands. Whilst the Mini-Tug can be employed for street orderly duties it can, for instance, be turned into a footpath snowplough or hopper /spreader.
A four-wheel-drive appliance has been introduced by the General Descaling Co. Ltd. in order to simplify the problems of access for sewer cleaning when manholes are located away from main roads. This is Mod& 527 which is mounted on a 10-ton chassis and has a 1,000 gal. water capacity. An auxiliary diesel engine is fitted to operate the high-pressure pump.
Handling of refuse skips by means of existing tractors is the object of the Power-X system of Steelfab Ltd. Apart from economy in equipment, the Power-X system has the advantage that it can be carried out single-handed, being based on a hydraulically powered X-frame chassis and range of special containers, the chassis is connected to an existing tractor. Powerful hydraulic equipment is provided to handle the containers, mechanical locks secure them to the chassis, and by means of the hydraulic rams the containers can be tipped through an angle of 57 deg.
The Dennis Paxit 70 is the principal offering of Dennis Bros. Ltd. With a capacity up to 7 tons this unit has a two-stage loading and compression mechanism which gives a high speed of operation. The body is steel-framed with aluminium alloy panelling and the crew cab carries five in addition to the driver. Compression ratio is stated to be 4:1 and discharge is by ejector. The Dennis municipal range employs rationalized chassis with frames of all-bolted construction.
Operational equipment of special interest is produced by Johnston Bros. (Engineering) Ltd. For the jetting appliance a large pump of 50 gpm capacity, operated by an auxiliary diesel engine, gives the necessary power for the cleansing of sewers up to 4ft 6in. in diameter. The hose is carried along the sewer by the thrust through a special nozzle, being winched back, the high pressure jets meanwhile driving the material along to the manhole. Several designs of nozzle are available for heavily silted culverts.
A newcomer to the Rolba range of snow clearing equipment is a combination of that organization's Rapid two-wheel tractor and a rotary snowplough attachment. Without the use of tools this machine can be converted from a rotary snowplough to a reversible blade plough.
