Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• The Press Tool and Metal Stamping Co Ltd, of Duke Street, Birkenhead, has issued a statement in connection with its pressed metal clamps used for clamping spare wheel carriers manufactured by Wellamforge Ltd to the base flange of the I-beam main frame of semi-trailers.

Press Tool say that a quantity of pressed clamps may be in service with cracks on the bend radius (see sketch). These have not developed through service rigours, but are believed to have occurred in manufacture as the result of a batch of faulty material; because of the company's comprehensive inspection system, it believes there is likely to be only a very small number of faulty clamps in service. Hauliers with trailers having such clamps are advised to check them; immediate free replacement for faulty clamps will be provided by Press Tool, who have taken steps to prevent a recurrence of the trouble, and offer its apologies to any operators affected.
